Co-sponsored by the Center for African, Black & Caribbean Studies

Featuring large-scale portraits of significant figures in Black History.

Artist’s Statement:

These portraits are related to my encounters with the facts comprising the remarkable lives of the human beings depicted here.

Biographical and historical references, have served as points of entry into the world of the known and unknown, instigated by the study of the lives and times into which the study of these personages have, inevitably, led me.

The delicately nuanced layering of shades and contours have combined to form a finely tuned image of each individual. The intense concentration and passion invested in the creative process imbues each portrait with dynamism and sense of presence reflecting an organic connection between what is objectively seen and subjectively felt, thereby giving shape to an experience of personal truth.
