Artist’s Statement

To me, every object possesses a personality. I am interested in exploring: family, relationships, the idea of home, community, love, loneliness, isolation, humor, sadness, happiness, food, and gathering around the table. I make work about family. Each family member is a character. Each object I paint has a character. Common products I find in my mother’s cabinets are vehicles for my exploration of family dynamics.

As an observational painter I focus on the abstract moments, which exist within ordinary, recognizable forms. I search for luminosity, color, composition, repetition, and pattern in order to transform the products I find. I do not view these products as a bottle of ketchup, a juice pouch, or a bag of cookies, but rather as family members and representations of my personal relationships. A painting of three juice pouches lying down depicts the sleepovers my brother, cousin, and I would have growing up. As a photographer, I reveal the characters, relationships, and personalities in the paintings. It is my hope that the viewer feels invited to sit down at my table and join the conversation.
