DOWNrightART Exhibition

10th DOWNrightART Exhibition

Exhibition of the works of artists with Down syndrome hosted in collaboration between Alexander’s Angels and Adelphi University.

Down syndrome, or Trisomy 21 is generally caused by an error in the development of one of the reproductive cells that combine at conception and results in an individual with an extra copy of the 21st chromosome—the over-expression of genes on chromosome 21 significantly impacts cognition according to Down Syndrome Research and Treatment Foundation (now LuMindRDS Foundation). Yet, National Down Syndrome Society affirms that although all people with Down syndrome experience cognitive delays, this is not indicative of the many strengths and talents that each individual possesses.

DOWNrightART illustrates how individuals with Down syndrome have used their strengths and talents to produce a serious body of artwork while overcoming physical and cognitive difficulties. By highlighting the contribution that individuals with Down syndrome have made and can make to society, the exhibition also partially fulfills Alexander’s Angels mission.

DOWNrightART shows the value of the arts as a means of self-expression and communication, as well as the impact art can have in the lives of all people. The work of the artists included in this exhibition shows their deep appreciation of the beauty in nature, as well as their inner conflicts, fears and hopes.
