Paintings by Algernon ‘’Jerry’’ Churchill

Dr. Churchill was a Professor in the Adelphi University Biology Department for more than 40 years receiving the Teaching Excellence Award from the University in 2005.
As a gifted teacher, Jerry opened the eyes of others to the natural world, sharing with students, family and friends his genuine curiosity in even the smallest of plants and animals. Always artistic, in the 1990s, he took a series of courses in nature illustration at the Bronx Botanical Garden.

After honing his skills, Jerry proceeded to observe, collect and illustrate many bees and wasps. Looking through a dissecting microscope, he drew and painted these creatures in astonishing detail, using dry brush watercolor, colored pencils and occasionally acrylic paint. So myriad are bees and wasps in our world, he had to leave many specimens unidentified.

Jerry enjoyed this hobby the rest of his life and now these paintings help us to view the natural world through his eyes.

There will be a public reception on November 4 at 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.
